Information:

Artist Proof Studio (APS) has been offered an amazing opportunity to have a twenty-one-year retrospective at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2012. We have been offered the 13 Galleries upstairs as well as the entire lower floor.  The space downstairs will consist of approximately 20 small exhibition stalls of current work by APS teachers and staff that showcase the pillars of APS made up of emerging and recognised talent.

The galleries upstairs will exhibit various projects over the years, including an exhibition of new and past work. One of the main central Galleries will showcase an exhibition of large lino prints and new editions; another main gallery will show some of the collaborations the since the fire of 2003. The other spaces will include photographs and works from past projects, the HIV Paper Prayers and advocacy campaigns, the best of student work, ‘after-the-fire prints’, international and local portfolio exchanges.

The JAG, through support from our funders and patrons will publish a catalogue, edited by Pamela Allara from Boston with a range of contributing essays. Ten of the students are being mentored by the Wits writing centre to collect oral histories from past and present studio artists and collaborators. The texts for the catalogue and exhibitions will be accompanied by woodcut portraits by the students and artists.

This is an ambitious and enormously exciting project and provides a special opportunity to honour many of the artists who have joined hands to build, shape and energise the studio over the years.
